I think they were both right. But Huxley was probably more right.

They’re definitely both right.

One must look at the scope of the world, not just America or “developed” societies.

If they are both (which I believe they were) talking about the downfall of man as a whole, and not specific societies, Orwell applies to the middle-east, the U.S. puppet-states, and horrible acts against humanity in general such as Guantanamo.

Huxley simply pertains to the “developed” world.

Just remember that Orwell's 1984 world also included distractions such as propaganda films, lotteries, and trashy entertainments he described as prolefeed. Concepts that Harry Harrison also picked up on in the Bill the Galactic Hero series.

As Ivan Stang once noted, “They don’t need the TV to watch you as long as you’re watching the TV”.
